The bird in the painting above is a red-whiskered bulbul and is one of my favorite birds. When I lived in Pasadena, California there was always a pair living in the back garden.

The bulbuls had a beautiful song so I knew when they were out and about. They did not seem to be bothered by my presence. Of course I took countless photos. (below)

Every spring there was a new nest and soon I was looking out for fledglings on the ground. Bulbuls are diligent parents and were always nearby. The photo below shows the start of the crest on the fledglings head.
